Abstract
Rats, when vitamin A deficient, had increased plasma T3, T4 and free thyroxine indexes. Pituitary TSH and hypothalamic TRH content were increased in vitamin A deficient animals compared to pair-fed controls. The plasma TSH response to TRH was normal in the vitamin A deficient rats. Basal prolactin, LH and FSH levels did not differ significantly in the two groups. Both groups had significant increases in LH and FSH after LRH. Vitamin A deficiency produces biochemical hyperthyroidism. Our data are consistent with an abnormality in thyroid hormone feedback on the hypothalamic pituitary axis.
