Microvesicular steatosis and steatohepatitis: role of mitochondrial dysfunction and lipid peroxidation

THOUGH drugs can produce a variety of different liver lesions, only a few of these lesions
can actually lead to death (!, 2). A first form of severe druginduced liver injury is extensive
liver cell necrosis, which may lead to fulminant hepatitis. This liver lesion is mainly due to the
formation of reactive metabolites that ale either directly toxic, or trigger immune reactions (2).
However, in some instances of cytolytic hepatitis, uncoupling or inhibition of mitochondrial
