Vascular endothelium forms a continuous cellular interface between the circulating blood
elements and the surrounding tissues. Endothelium forms a nonthrombogenic surface and
selective permeability barrier capable of modulating vascular reactivity and blood flow. The
integrity of the endothelium is fundamental for the maintenance of normal homeostasis.
