IL-2 is required for the growth and differentiation of most T and B lymphocytes. We and
others have reported that SLE-derived peripheral blood mononuclear cells (MNC) produce
decreased amounts of IL-2 when stimulated in vitro with certain mitogens (1, 2). The
impaired in vitro production of IL-2 may have relevance to the development of the disease
since it correlates with the increased spontaneous IgG production by SLE MNC (3). One
