The intrinsic neural control of the gastrointestinal tract is mediated by the enteric nervous
system, the activity of which can be modulated by local stimuli, by inputs from the central
nervous system and by various hormones [20]. Analysis of the enteric circuits that regulate
the behaviour of the gut is, therefore, a crucial step in understanding the mechanisms
