Sterol regulatory element-binding proteins (SREBP-1 and SREBP-2) are proteins of~ 1150
amino acids each that are attached to membranes of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). In
sterol-depleted cells, a protease releases an NH 2-terminal fragment of~ 500 amino acids
that contains a basic helix-loop-helix leucine zipper motif. This fragment enters the nucleus
and stimulates transcription of genes encoding the low density lipoprotein receptor and
