On VEGFR-2–positive leukemias, VEGF may support leukemic cell growth through paracrine (by increasing bone marrow endothelium cell mass) and autocrine (supporting leukemic cell survival) mechanisms. Antibodies against human VEGFRs may block the autocrine loop induced by leukemia-derived human VEGF.
