Pathology consistent with TTP in Adamts13B/CN2–/– mice following Stx challenge. (A) Peripheral blood from a control Adamts13B/CN2+/+ mouse after Stx challenge. (B) Peripheral blood from an Adamts13B/CN2–/– mouse shows extensive microangiopathic changes, with numerous schistocytes and rbc fragments. (CK) In Adamts13B/CN2–/– mice, widespread “hyaline clots” were observed in H&E–stained sections of brain (C), heart (F), and kidney (I). By immunohistochemistry, these thrombi were intensely positive for vWF (D, G, and J) but only weakly positive for fibrin (E, H, and K). Difficult-to-visualize thrombi are indicated with arrows. Magnification, ×1,000 (A and B); and ×200 (CK).
