Neuronal injury in the frontal cortex of SIV-infected, CD8 lymphocyte–depleted rhesus macaques demonstrated by decreased synaptophysin and MAP-2 protein expression and decreased NAA/Cr analyzed in ex vivo tissues. Shown are measurements of synaptophysin (SYN), MAP-2, and NAA/Cr in the frontal cortex tissues from controls (black bars) and SIV infected, CD8 lymphocyte–depleted monkeys (white bars). The values are normalized to those for controls, which were considered to be 100%. Error bars represent SEM. P values determined by Student’s t test indicated significant or nearly significant differences between the control versus SIV-infected and CD8 lymphocyte–depleted monkeys.
