In vitro primary mouse hepatocyte proliferation in response to SCF or IL-6 with and without treatment with anti–IL-6 or anti-SCF. Treatment of primary mouse hepatocytes with IL-6 or SCF alone resulted in a significant increase in hepatocyte proliferation after 24 hours of incubation (*P < 0.05 vs. media alone). Next, cells were treated with SCF and anti–IL-6 antibody; this treatment did not result in a significant change in hepatocyte proliferation. In contrast, when cells were treated with IL-6 and anti-SCF antibody, a significant decrease in hepatocyte proliferation was observed (P < 0.05 vs. IL-6 and SCF alone). Data are expressed as mean ± SEM.
