Formation of cholic acid (CA) from chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA) by the microsomal cytochrome P450 enzyme sterol 12α-hydroxylase, which is encoded by the Cyp8b1 gene. The enzyme can also hydryoxylate other 7α-hydroxylated intermediates in the bile acid pathways (see ref. 13).
