Effects of SM and MC GXM on phagocytosis in vitro and in vivo. (a) Inhibition of phagocytosis of Cap67mutant cells by SM and MC GXM. Phagocytosis was significantly more inhibited (63% vs. 23%, P = 0.003, t test) by 500 μg MC GXM than SM GXM. Control is PI of Cap67 cells without GXM. (b) Formation of vacuoles in Mφ’s of SMmice are the result of digested C. neoformans. (c) In contrast, intracellular persistence of C. neoformans is observed in Mφ’s of MCmice.
